Reflect on how your cultural heritage shapes your daily expectations, inspired by "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid
Prompt Response: Throughout my life, my cultural heritage has presented challenges for me and those around me. Reading this short excerpt, I was able to make many connections to how I can relate. Certain things like: your legs have to be side by side or crossed, have good posture, stay away from boys, you cannot have friends that are boys, stay away from social media, don't wear revealing clothes, keep your hair long and silky, dress like our culture once in a while, and so on. At times, it can be overwhelming, but reading this script made me think about a lot of things. Due to learning these norms, expectations, and traditions at a very young age, I wouldn't try to rebel or second-guess anything that was told to me. Of course, due to there are consequences at the end. It definitely shapes my daily expectations to this day. Now that I know some things I don't agree on, based on respect, is why I continue committing to it, and not all are so bad.
Summary: As a class, we read out loud the script "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid and analyze its cultural heritage.
Reflection: While reading, I learned that our parents will always have expectations they want us to follow. That is because they, too, had expectations they had to follow themselves. I feel like it's generational because it is connected to our culture. I learned how to interpret many things from each point of view in the script.
