Troy’s complaint about the unfair job system shows his frustration with racial discrimination. How did this conversation make you think about fairness and opportunity in society today? If you were in Troy’s position, what would you do?

Writing prompt: Troy’s complaint about the unfair job system, where African American men were not able to work certain positions, like being a driver instead of just a laborer, shows how racism shaped people’s opportunities in the 1950s. It made me think about how fairness and opportunity still aren’t equally distributed in society today. Even though laws have changed, people still face discrimination. If I were in Troy’s situation, I would probably feel just as angry and discouraged. But I might try to do is speak up. I would also try to support and encourage other people to pursue opportunities.

Summary: Today in class we continued reading fences.

Reflection: Today I learned more about the characters and trying to relate to them and put myself in their position.
