Hair can be a powerful way people express who they are and where they come from. Think about your own hair, your style, texture, or how you choose to wear it. How does your hair connect to your culture or your identity? Describe a moment when your hair made you feel proud, uncomfortable, or misunderstood, and explain why
Writing prompt: The way I wear my hair is different from how my culture would normally wear it. When I was much younger, I would follow the rules that my culture would want me to wear my hair and feel proud. However, I did not agree with it. I had to have my hair long, straightened, and shiny. I was born with coiled hair and very hard to manage. So, due to this, I had to straighten it every time, causing my hair to be damaged and never curly ever again. It was very sad and I never felt like myself. So, eventually I cut my hair very short and stopped straightening it. My mother did not approve for a moment, but then eventually she saw how I started to shine in every way. Ever since I've never felt better. I also have seen stories like this in the media, which helped me feel like I was still a part of my culture. I agree with the fact that we will always be connected to our roots, but times do change, we learn to adapt to changes but still be connected.
Summary: Today in class, we watched a video about how hair can be important to our identity and show where we come from.
Reflection: Today in class I learned how the way we have our hair, how we are dressed, or anything that makes us who we wear, have a great impact to our culture and encourage the people around us to embrace theirs as well.
