Think about a film that represents your culture (or a culture you identify with) in a positive and meaningful way. Explain how the film represents the culture and why this portrayal matters. Be sure to include specific examples from the film.
Writing prompt: A film that represents my culture is Selena. It is about a Mexican American singer who struggled with fitting in. Although it sounds negative, it really represents my culture because in the movie, it portrayed her a Mexican American who is not American enough for an American and not Mexican enough to be Mexican. So, she could not have enough from two worlds. However, her turning point was having to learn Spanish because at first she didn’t know how. She put effort into that side of her culture. In the American side, she knew the language, it was mostly about being accepted by others. So she went into the musical industry, so that everyone can see her through her talent and not her race. I connect so much with this movie because at times, I feel like I can’t have both words, even thought it is who I am and what I believe I am to be apart of.
